How do you calculate rate of return on a 401(k)?

bshaddeau asked:

I contribute at regular intervals to my 401(k). I receive statements each month that shows my gain/loss. How do you calculate the actual rate of return on a 401(k)?

What exactly does “lock in your losses’ in a 401 mean?

I have lost 50% of my 401K and plan on retiring in 5 years. Had I moved my allocations to a “safe” choice like the credit union fund (within the 401) I would have “locked in my losses”. So what? Wouldn’t it have been better to sit there and not earn much as opposed to loosing 50%?
