In many cases the title tag on a webpage or website is totally misused and because of this many sites are ranking lower for the keywords that they are trying oh so desperately to get traffic from.

So many websites use the title tag for the company name or some general information, and in some cases there is so much text in the tag that there is no way all of it will be read or shown by the search engine.

The title tag appears in the head section of a web page. This tag is also the words that are displayed on the search engine results page.

The title tag on your website is located near the top of the code in a web page and looks like this.

Now if you have your company name in there or a garbage can full of useless text, that is what will appear in the results.

Your title tag should not be longer than around 70 characters, white spaces included. This makes it easier for the search engine to determine what the page is about and the visitor to see what information you have for him or her.

If you want to rank high in the search engine results the title tag plays even a more important role than what most people seem to realize. For high rankings you need two things to work together, the title tag and the anchor text that is pointing to your website from links on other sites.

This means that if another website is pointing a link to your website the text in the link (the stuff in blue usually) should be exactly the same as the title tag on your webpage.

So if your webpage square-golf-balls.html is targeting the keyword “square golf balls” the title tag of that web page must be “Square Golf Balls”. When another site points a link to your page the anchor text of the link, the text that is clickable, must read “square golf balls”.

Following these very simple rules will ensure that the search engine knows that your webpage is about square golf balls and therefore your ranking for the term in the results will improve.

The more links you have pointing to that your web page from other quality websites with the anchor text “square golf balls” the higher you will rise in the ranking.
